Introduction to the Enneagram
November 17, 2018 @ 10:00 am - 5:00 pmR650
Why find out your number on a few shapes strung together that they call the enneagram? how could a number make a difference to my life? Aren’t I more or less the same as everyone else?
Well the answers to these questions may surprise you, at least that’s how I hope you will feel after a day immersion in the enneagram.
I’ll tell you a little about my why. I learned about the enneagram in my 20’s. Before then I felt that I was different, that there were few like me and the rest of the world was filled with people who mostly understood each other.
I remember the relief that came when I sat with other 4’s on an enneagram workshop and began to see that there were in fact many others that think, feel and behave in similar ways to me. What a relief it was. Finally I understood that I didn’t need to make myself other than what I am. My practice now is to do my best to catch these patterns as they arise in me or whenever I wake up to being on ‘autopilot’.
The enneagram helps us to know what kind of patterns to look out for. i.e. rooted in shame, fear or anger. Since our ego’s are quite predictable in nature, we can also anticipate certain pattens to play out.
Now that we know a little more about these unconscious patterns at play in our lives, what should we do about it?
The answer that I learned from many well respected enneagram teachers like Helen Palmer, Russ Hudson, David Daniels and others, is much less than we may think. The effort that counts the most is paying attention to ourselves.
If we know something is running in us that we didn’t know before, than we also have a choice to change it. It may take a while to choose differently, but as we learn to stay present with ourselves, we also open to the opportunities that come with more informed choices. Informed by a deeper sense of who we are, informed by our hearts and minds in balance.
We can stop blaming others for our unhappiness and instead, respond more naturally to people and situations in our life. We can understand in a visceral what its like taking another persons perspective and consequently make it possible for our relationships to dramatically improve.
My wife, Leeane and I took leaps and bounds in our relationship as a result of this knowledge. We look forward to share this invaluable map of relating with you! You will have the chance to get a feel for all the personalities on the enneagram and see what you resonate most strongly with. You’ll leave with tools that you can put into practice in your everyday life both at home and at work.
